Delivery to St Anthony's

at Bart on our way to St Anthony's
in a room surrounded by 5000 gift bags
Five of us, 3 Karing Knitters from Castro Valley and 2 from Danville, delivered a total of 44 hats and 93 scarves to St. Anthony's for the homeless in
San Francisco.  The Staff was very appreciative and thankful for our donation and showed us where the scarves and hats were packaged together with toiletries in bags to be given to the homeless at Christmas time. We were also shown the dining room where 2,500 meals are served daily. It's always heartwarming when staff and clients are thankful for donations.

Baby hats for Kaiser Hospital

On 11/26/13 we delivered 65 baby hats to the Kaiser Maternity Ward and the nurses were thrilled to receive them.  It was a fun delivery for us partly because both Barbara and Peggy knew two new Moms who had just delivered their babies and were in the recovery section of the maternity ward.  Barbara gave her Mom friend a baby hat and spoke with her for a few minutes and Peggy gave the nurse a hat to bring to the Mom she knew. We celebrated our donation by eating lunch at the Cheesecake Factory afterwards.

Jean, our Vacaville Karing Knitter, has generously knitted hats for us over the past three years.  Here she is displaying some of the six Christmas hats that were delivered to Kaiser Walnut Creek.
Thank you Jean!

Hat Delivery to Kaiser

TODAY was the BEST hat delivery I think we've had so far.  We arrived at the Maternity Ward at the exact right time as most of the nurses were at the front desk and all we're so excited to look through the bag of 43 hats we gave them.  One of the nurses said that her patient just had twins, a boy and a girl and immediately selected two matching hats, and two of the other nurses picked hats for their patients.  Anne asked if the Moms appreciated the hats and there was a resounding YES from all of the nurses.  We are apparently the only group that donates hats so the nurses are thrilled when we arrive.

thank you Durango Yarn

During a long train/bus tour or Colorado (a beautiful state) I was working on scarves for Christmas at St Anthony's and ran out of yarn - heaven forbid. When our train arrived in Durango a wonderful site appeared - Durango Yarn.  It is a wonderful shop with a great variety of yarns at reasonable prices.

So if you are ever in Durango look for the shop.  It really is a - not to miss shop.

Spotlight on Maria

One of our knitting contributors is Maria. She has made 14 scarves, 82 baby beanies and  23 chemo hats since she started contributing to the Karing Knitters. Maria knits all her scarves and hats on a loom. Her color combinations and attention to detail are very welcoming!
Thanks Maria!

Smallest Knitter

On 8/6, we had Blake, our newest and youngest knitter,  join us for our knitting session.  He loved checking out the nice soft yarn and sitting on Harriet's comfy lap. Blake is the grandson of proud grandma Barbara (left).

4th of July hats and more

The Karing Knitters delivered 14 4th of July Baby Hats and 70 general baby hats to Kaiser Maternity Ward.  We know that those babies will be leaving the hospital and starting their new lives decked out in style.  Welcome little ones!
Many thanks to Kaiser's Dr. Blake McLaughlin (right) and Yury Kamenesky, RN (left) for receiving the hats and even modeling them.

Barbara, Peggy, and their Mother, Marianne, took a mini vacation to Santa Rosa on April 17, 2013.  There, in Old Town, they found the cutest knitting shop called Cast Away Yarn.  The shop was filled with beautiful yarn along with adorable hand knitted clothing.

Can you believe that Barbara's neighbor was kind enough to donate yet more yarn for our charity knitting! Thank you so much!  Pictured are three more bags full of beautiful yarn that we received on May 7, 2013.

St. Pats & Easter

On March 12, 2013, Jan, Barbara, and Peggy had fun delivering 13 St. Paddy's Day Hats and 20 Easter/Spring Hats to Kaiser's Maternity Ward.  Most of the nurses were busy monitoring their patients but one of the nurses thanked us and expressed how much the new Moms appreciate receiving our hats.  We had even more fun after the delivery eating lunch outside at the Cheesecake Factory.

Monday, February 11, 2013

It's almost Valentine's Day, 2013, (February 12, 2013),  and time to deliver fifteen color appropriate hats to Kaiser Walnut Creek.  We know that the babies, families, and nurses will be thrilled to receive our donations.

We decided to start donating our hats to County Hospitals.  Our first County Delivery of 35 hats including Valentine and St. Patrick's Day was made on February 12, 2013 to Martinez Regional Center.  The volunteer coordinator was very grateful of our donations.

Harmony Hill and more

Barbara and Peggy's step sister volunteers at Harmony Hill which is a retreat center for Stage 4 and end of life Cancer Patients in Union, Washington.  We decided to donate 10 Chemo Hats to them to distribute to their patients.

On a late note:

Peggy delivered 8 Red and Green Hats on December 23rd to Kaiser Walnut Creek for the upcoming Christmas babies. As usual, the nurses were most grateful for the donation. They were expecting a set of twins to be delivered Christmas Day and set aside two matching hats for the babies.
